Songs From the Iron Chair
Russ Daughtry wanted
to name his CD of original music Songs From the
Iron Chair because during the last three years of his life that's where
he spent a good part of his time: in a wheelchair.
Diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, in 1997, Russ progressively utilized adaptive equipment for daily tasks, and used a computer and synthesizer to compose and record music. An instrument called a "head mouse" moved the cursor on the computer screen according to his head movements. Using this, he put together a collection of original songs, which are available for purchase on CD.
Songs from the Iron
Chair combines rock, classical music and jazz influences with technological wizardry to make a
moving, intelligent and beautiful musical listening experience. For a sample of
one of his songs from the CD, click here to play.
Russ was playing and writing music since he was 12, and played with many
musicians throughout the world. His singing has been heard in many commercial recordings,
TV and radio commercials and even a movie soundtrack (Dances With Wolves).
Teaching guitar and music theory to young people and composing on his synthesizer, Russ
spent all of his time until the day he died with the vocation that always was his heart's desire: music.
